Dr. Joseph, was the Division Chair for Trauma Critical Care and Prevention in the Department of Trauma at the Stroger Hospital of Cook County in Chicago (Cook County Hospital) from 2002 to 2017. She joined the attending staff in the Department of Trauma in 1993. During her time at County, she contributed to initiatives in screening for Child Abuse and Neglect, Elder Abuse, and Intimate Partner Violence. She served as the medical lead for Healing Hurt People, the Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program jointly conducted by the Department of Trauma and Comer Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Joseph was also active in the Chicago Committee on Trauma (CCOT), running the local Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) program for more than a decade; she was a Vice Chair and subsequently Chair of the CCOT. Following that, she was named the national Chair for the ATLS program from 2018-2022 and is now the Education Pillar Chair for the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons. She has served on committees in the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Society of Critical Care Medicine; she participates on a collaborative workgroup with the Society for Social Work Leadership in Healthcare.

Dr. Joseph was the first woman to Chair the Surgical Section of the National Medical Association and is currently the outgoing Executive Director for the Section. She serves currently as the Secretary of the Surgical Leaders Foundation.
